"Laura Jones set the stage for a reinvigoration and a full scale revival of the still life. The intensity of her full throttle, polyamorous colour and the frontality of her compositions put botanical portraiture in a new context." Anna Johnson

Laura Jones (b. Sydney 1982) is perhaps best known for her paintings of flowers, and for her series exploring climate change impacts on The Great Barrier Reef. Laura's distinct visual language is defined by astute observation of colour and form, reinvigorating the still life genre. Broad brushes laden with thin washes of oil paint are rapidly drawn onto the canvas, in a method of capturing the essence of her subject, without being overly concerned with the minutiae of a botanic artist.

In her most recent show ‘Olympia’ at Olsen Gallery Sydney, the artist welcomed the viewer into her inner-city studio in the famed old building of the same name. The Olympia building in Paddington ran as a cinema from 1910-2010, and Laura carries this filmic quality into her diaristic collection of works. The natural light of the studio illuminates her scenes, which tells a story of rambling nights, gallery openings- and of course, flowers. In ‘Olympia’, Laura introduces a realist grit to her work, which Anna Johnson describes as “the thorn” of her distinctive floral paintings.

Laura has completed residencies at Australian Museum’s Lizard Island Research Station, Heron Island Research Station, and Glasshouse Regional Art Gallery. The Glasshouse Residency will form the basis for a solo show at the gallery in March 2020. Following this show, a recent trip to Antarctica will inspire her next body of work at Sophie Gannon Gallery in 2020. Using drawings, photography and video compiled on the December 2018 trip, the artist will continue her investigation of the personal, scientific and political ideas and meaning behind humanity's impact on, and interaction with, the environment.

Laura is represented by Sophie Gannon Gallery in Melbourne and Olsen Gallery in Sydney. She has been a finalist in awards such as the Archibald Prize, Portia Geach Memorial Award, Kings School Art Prize, Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, and the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. She holds a Bachelor of Arts- Asian Studies from Sydney University, and a Master of Art - Printmaking from the College of Fine Arts- UNSW.
